Upon entering our office, our receptionist will welcome you as a member of our family. We will request that you complete some paperwork so the doctor can know a little bit about your condition and history. Many patients find it more convenient to fill out their paperwork ahead of time and submit it to us online. If you'd like, you can find our intake form right here on the website, located in the New Patient Center under "Online Forms". This way, we can be ready to get started as soon as possible when you arrive for your first visit.
Next, you will have a consultation with Dr. Michael Bartell to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, and potential treatment options. This initial visit is designed for Dr. Bartell to learn more about you, your condition, and expectations to determine how chiropractic care can meet your goals.
After your consultation, Dr. Bartell will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes, flexibility, and range of motion. Other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical tests may be performed as well. Nothing will be done in our office without your consent, however you should understand that tests like these are important indicators of where you may have subluxations (where spinal bones are not moving properly) and how those subluxations are affecting your nerve function.
Depending on your specific condition, we may take X-rays as well. X-rays help us develop the most effective treatment plan for you. In addition to alerting us of any serious spinal conditions, X-rays show the precise location of subluxations in your spine, and indicate to the doctor how long the problem has been there. Most people are amazed once they see their X-rays up close. In some cases, they can even identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.
Report of Findings
Once the information is collected and examinations are performed, Dr. Bartell will give you a detailed report of findings. This is the time when Dr. Bartell brings together all the information gathered through your history, examination, and X-rays, and helps you gain a thorough understanding of how the problems in your spine are affecting your health. Most patients find this to be one of the most important and valuable moments in the office. You may or may not have had your first adjustment at this point, but Dr. Bartell will definitely schedule your report of findings within your first three visits. You will be making important decisions about your health and it's important that you have the most complete understanding that we can give you.
Your report of findings is designed to answer any questions including:
- How can you help me?
- How often do I need to come in?
- What will my treatment cost?
After reviewing your health history, goals, and examining your spine and X-rays, Dr. Bartell will discuss recommendations and begin providing the best treatment and wellness program for your needs.
When we have completed a thorough examination and you understand how chiropractic care can benefit you, you can choose to experience your first adjustment. Treatment will be based on spinal adjustments and may include various active physical therapy techniques designed to optimize your body's ability to heal, and to retrain your spine to hold its new position. Chiropractic care is interactive, so you can express concerns about the different styles of treatment anytime.
Prior to leaving, the doctor will suggest a wellness program to incorporate in addition to your treatment in the office. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include: ice or heat application instructions, certain activities or positions to avoid, and exercises and/or stretches you can do at home. As time goes on, if you desire, our wellness team will work with you also to create healthy habits and routines for your lifestyle. Every person is unique, therefore everyone requires a customized wellness plan. The purpose of our wellness program is for you to achieve good spinal alignment, have a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive mental state.
